Why to Make Homemade Cat Food?
Making cat food at home has many benefits.
As a cat owner, you are in control of the ingredients, which means no preservatives, artificial additives, or unknown substances. The food is always fresh and prepared at the peak of its nutritional value, with the perfect taste. In addition, these recipes could be modifiable to make the foods suit your cat if it has unique needs regarding allergies, sensitivities, or other general dietary preferences. Homemade food contains much more protein and lower carbohydrate levels, which suits a cat’s carnivorous nature.
Recipe Basics: The 80-10-10 Rule
The 80-10-10 rule is an excellent guideline for a balanced diet for cats. This means that 80% of the meal should be meat, 10% bones, and 10% organs.
- Meat: It’s absolutely varied! From chicken and turkey to beef, salmon, and tuna—use any type of the protein source that you already have, while it still provides all the necessary amino acids for your cat.
- Bones: Raw bones, such as chicken necks or lamb ribs, give the nutrients of calcium and phosphorus needed in correct quantities for bones and teeth. Ensure the bones are a suitable size, and do not feed them to kittens under four months of age.
- Organs: Liver, kidney, and spleen are considered the warehouses of the body and packed with vitamins, minerals, and enzymes essential for the cat’s health.
Adding Supplements
While the 80-10-10 rule is excellent, dietary supplements can turn homemade cat food into a complete nutrition product. Consider these:
- Alnutra: This herbal supplement contains taurine, an essential amino acid for cats.
- Salmon/Cod Liver Oil: Contains a high amount of omega-3 fatty acids beneficial to the skin and coat, which support healthy joint function.
- Taurine Powder: Adding taurine supplements the body with another dose of this potent amino acid.
Hot Recipes and Brands
There are many resources available with both recommendations and recipe books for homemade cat food. Here are some of the favorites:
- Viva Raw 80/10/10: This food comes in full meal options with the 80-10-10 ratio in organic meat along with supplements.

Benefits of Beef
Beef will be an excellent source of protein for cats, especially for those that are sensitive to chicken. Adding supplements, like eggshell powder, into a beef recipe, can make up for the calcium and phosphorous requirements. Introducing various organs, such as the liver and kidneys, into the recipe, ensures nutrient-rich food.
Comparing Homemade to Commercial Diet
Although commercial cat food is much more convenient, homemade food offers a lot of benefits:
- Control over Ingredients: You are in complete control of the ingredients in your pet’s diet, hence free from preservatives, artificial additives, and unknown stuff.
- Freshness: Home foods are made from fresh products, and hence their nutritional value is maximum, and also their taste is excellent.
- Customized Diet: Can be customized according to special feline diets, allergies, sensitivities, and their selective appetites.
- Healthier Diet: Homemade food has much more proteins than carbohydrates and is best for cats as carnivores.
While homemade food means a little more time and effort, the payoffs can be quite appealing for you regarding your pet’s health and well-being.
Protein Source Variety
Choosing a variety of protein sources is essential for providing your cat with all the essential amino acids. In addition to the chicken, beef, and heart, consider the following:
- Sardines: Rich in omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin D, sardines are an acceptable protein source for cats.
- Oysters: Small fish, these are packed with calcium, phosphorus, and taurine.
- Egg Yolks: Both are high protein foods and excellent sources of Vitamin B, but egg whites can be avoided as they are known to trigger issues in the digestive system.
Conclusion
Making cat food at home is a fun and rewarding way to take care of the health and well-being of your pet. With a little effort and planning, you can provide your cat with nutrient-rich, tasty food tailored to their individual needs.

Hey I really appreciate your post,it surely is helpful!
The 80, 10, 10 rule sounds great and reasonable, I like how it is also easily rememberable. Though I was aware how beef can be beneficial for cats, I am going to be honest I didn’t know how much goodness it can provide cats. I tend to avoid beef as it seems quite heavy or fat full but now I shall add it the the diet along with supplements, in particular salmon or cod liver oil since my cats adore fish!
Thank you for this post and information, have a great day!
